Can Hedonic Ratings Predict Pairwise Comparisons?

Back in 1950, ๐—ฃ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜†๐—ฎ๐—บ introduced the 9-๐˜ฑ๐˜ฐ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ต ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ค ๐˜ด๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ to replace the cumbersome multiple pairwise comparison approach.


Today, most consumer studies rely on ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—พ๐˜‚๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฐ ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€, making direct preference comparisons rare โ€” yet the interest in both ๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—น๐˜‚๐˜๐—ฒ ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด and ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฒ remains strong.


What if we could get both โ€” accurate ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ from ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฐ ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฐ ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜€?


In collaboration with The Institute for Perception, we explored this question by collecting both ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฐ ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜€ and ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ data from the ๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด.


Using ๐—ง๐—ต๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐˜€๐˜๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด, we:

โ€ข Estimated underlying hedonic dโ€ฒ values

โ€ข Converted these into predicted pairwise proportions

โ€ข Compared them with actual preference outcomes


๐—ž๐—ฒ๐˜† ๐—ณ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜€:

1. Predicted and observed preferences were aligned in direction.

2. A ๐Ÿฎ-๐˜๐—ผ-๐Ÿญ ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฝ emerged: to match real pairwise outcomes, the preference ratio from hedonic ratings must be roughly ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฑ.

โ—‹ For example, a 60/40 predicted split corresponds to an actual 70/30 preference.

โ—‹ This scaling reflects consumersโ€™ variability in the use of the hedonic scale, increasing the underlying variance of the data.
