Back in 1950, ๐ฃ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐๐ฎ๐บ introduced the 9-๐ฑ๐ฐ๐ช๐ฏ๐ต ๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ฅ๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ช๐ค ๐ด๐ค๐ข๐ญ๐ฆ to replace the cumbersome multiple pairwise comparison approach.
Today, most consumer studies rely on ๐๐ฒ๐พ๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐บ๐ผ๐ป๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฐ ๐ฒ๐๐ฎ๐น๐๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐, making direct preference comparisons rare โ yet the interest in both ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐๐ผ๐น๐๐๐ฒ ๐น๐ถ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ด and ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐น๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ต๐ผ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฒ remains strong.
What if we could get both โ accurate ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ from ๐บ๐ผ๐ป๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฐ ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด๐?
In collaboration with The Institute for Perception, we explored this question by collecting both ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด๐ and ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฑ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ data from the ๐ด๐ข๐ฎ๐ฆ ๐ค๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ด๐ถ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ด.
Using ๐ง๐ต๐๐ฟ๐๐๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป ๐บ๐ผ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐น๐ถ๐ป๐ด, we:
โข Estimated underlying hedonic dโฒ values
โข Converted these into predicted pairwise proportions
โข Compared them with actual preference outcomes
๐๐ฒ๐ ๐ณ๐ถ๐ป๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ด๐:
1. Predicted and observed preferences were aligned in direction.
2. A ๐ฎ-๐๐ผ-๐ญ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐น๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ต๐ถ๐ฝ emerged: to match real pairwise outcomes, the preference ratio from hedonic ratings must be roughly ๐ฑ๐ผ๐๐ฏ๐น๐ฒ๐ฑ.
โ For example, a 60/40 predicted split corresponds to an actual 70/30 preference.
โ This scaling reflects consumersโ variability in the use of the hedonic scale, increasing the underlying variance of the data.
๐ Another demonstration of the value of ๐ง๐ต๐๐ฟ๐๐๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป ๐บ๐ผ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐น๐ โ and a useful tool for researchers looking to link how people like to how they choose.
