FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Find technical insights regarding panel mechanics, timelines, and specialized product testing parameters.
The timeline depends heavily on the profiling methodology chosen and your product's complexity:
-
For a traditional QDA® approach, panel calibration typically requires 4 to 8 sessions, offering an efficient timeline for standalone projects.
-
For a hybrid Descriptive Analysis (DA) framework, panel alignment requires 15 to 20 sessions because panelists are calibrated on absolute rating scale values and rigorous physical references. This rigorous upfront training delivers long-term value, as it allows your data to be reliably compared across successive studies.
Once calibration is complete, the formal profiling phase is generally fast with a turnaround time from sample reception to report delivery of about one week. Of course, these are general benchmarks that can vary depending on the specific characteristics of the product being evaluated.
-
Candidates undergo rigorous acuity screening to evaluate their sensory sensitivity, taste/odor recognition, and descriptive verbal skills. Once selected, panelists undergo extensive foundational training. For every new project, they undergo product-specific calibration rounds to ensure the entire panel are aligned on attribute definitions, references, and scale intensities before formal testing begins.
Absolutely. Our California facility features a fully equipped, professional commercial kitchen designed specifically for rigorous sensory sample management. We are fully equipped to handle complex preparation protocols, strict temperature controls (for hot, refrigerated, or frozen products), precise holding times, and specialized non-food product preparation for personal care and cosmetics.
A trained descriptive panel acts as a highly calibrated analytical instrument. Panelists are completely objective; they identify and quantify the specific sensory attributes of a product (e.g., exact bitterness intensity on a 15-point scale) without letting personal bias or liking influence their ratings. In contrast, a consumer panel generally measures subjective preference and acceptability (e.g., how much they like the product). In short: trained panels tell you what sensory properties are in the product, while consumer panels tell you if the market actually likes them.
