Thurstone and Triadic Whisperer

Next year, Thurstonian modeling will celebrate its first century. Yet, despite its deep influence on the scientific foundation of sensory science, preconceived ideas lacking theoretical support or experimental evidence endure.


Take the paradox of "discriminatory non-discriminators" (the superior performance of the ๐Ÿฏ-๐—”๐—™๐—– over the ๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ด๐—น๐—ฒ method), solved by ๐˜๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ซ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด back in 1979. Even though it was resolved by simply using the core assumptions of ๐—ง๐—ต๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐˜€๐˜๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜†, decades of industry and academic practice have often attributed this 3-AFC advantage simply to "the additional piece of information" (knowing the dimension of the difference).


For instance:

ย โ€ข ๐™’๐™ž๐™ ๐™ž๐™ฅ๐™š๐™™๐™ž๐™– wrongly stipulates: โ€œPeople perform better in a three-alternative forced choice task when told in advance which dimension of the stimulus to attend to.โ€

ย โ€ข Similarly, current ๐™‡๐™‡๐™ˆ๐™จ like Gemini give an imprecise explanation, claiming that knowing the attribute "drastically reduces the mental workload" compared to evaluating all dimensions in a Triangle test.


Recent research (link in comments) shows this is ๐—ก๐—ข๐—ง why the 3-AFC is more powerful.


In a recent study, when panelists were explicitly told the dimension of the difference in a triangle test (a "specified triangle"), this additional information did not result in an increase in their ability to discriminate between lemon-based beverages:

โ€œWhisperingโ€ the nature of the difference to the panelist during a triangle test ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฑ ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜ ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฒ the cognitive decision rule or facilitate discrimination.


These practical results powerfully support Thurstonian theory and illustrate the ๐™ฉ๐™ง๐™ช๐™š ๐™ซ๐™–๐™ก๐™ช๐™š of mathematical decision models in sensory science.
